We live on a small acreage, just south of Calgary, Alberta, Canada with our Golden Retrievers, (our version of kids). We love our country home, where we regularly see deer, pheasants and other wildlife out our living room window. The air is fresh, in winter the snow is white, and we can listen to the constant rumble of "nothing". Just listening to the peace. Yet, with the town of Okotoks just five minutes away, and south Calgary (Canada's forth largest city) only ten minutes away, we have the benefits of a modern city.

This page won The Great White North's page of excellence award on June 18, 1997. Unfortunately that site and its many Canadian links seems to be gone now.
This site was created by Dave Heinze.
New Pics From time to time we change the pictures of wildlife (see link above), Dogs and Canadian scenery (see links below).
New Links We are often adding or changing the links at the bottom of the page.
New Dog Sections Since losing Teak in December 2001, and getting April in April of 2002 we have added a page for each dog and each litter of puppies. See the links to the pages in the Dogs section below.
Marian is a farm girl. She grew up on a farm (funny how that works) south of Drayton Valley, Alberta. Then she moved to Edmonton and became an accountant (she's still not sure why). But then she moved to Calgary. Dave grew up in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Then he became an accountant (so he would meet Marian) and moved to Ottawa, and then to Calgary. Around 1980/81, they joined the Petroleum Ski Club where they met. No, it wasn't love at first sight, we were close friends for six months first. Then one night we decided to test the waters. Well, we will not go into that. Now we have been married for over 20 years, and running a family business together for most of it. And yes, through all that, we are still happily married. Wonders will never cease.
Actually, Dave claims he only married Marian after she learned to fish. Marian says that she's going to shoot Dave for putting this picture on the web. Of course, Dave likes to fish too. The last thing he did before leaving Nova Scotia in 1978, was he went fishing for Atlantic Salmon. Teak also liked to fish, and so did Shea. But we had trouble keeping her in the boat. When she was young she had a nasty tendency of jumping overboard when someone caught a fish. Trust us, landing a 70 pound Golden Retriever plus about 20 gallons of water is not something you want to put on the top of your list of favorite things to do. Guess she really liked to retrieve. Now its April's turn and she loves it too. Actually, she is probably Dave's best fishin buddy yet.
We are very proud of our dogs; Take these links to see pictures of each dog and learn their story. Each of them has brought us their own special joy.
A funny dog story. One Thanksgiving weekend (1997 actually) (in Canada that is mid October), Dave was walking Teak through the camp grounds where our hideaway was located, when he heard a loud rustling noise, then after a second he saw Shea come tearing out from between two trailers, going full tilt pulling a large tarp. She rounded the bend, went down the road and straight into our sight. When he got to the sight, the tarp was laying in front of the trailer and Shea was waiting on the deck. It turns out that Marian had been walking her, when another dog startled her, causing her to pull the flex lead out of Marian's hand, it then caught a tarp which was laying on the road and she started running. Of course, the faster she ran, the faster the tarp ran after her. It really was very funny, this poor dog being chased home by a tarp. Where is the video camera when you need it?

Bolean Lake, British Columbia. A little piece of Heaven, on top of a mountain. We went there for fifteen years.
Bolean Lake is a small lake on top of Spa Mountain, outside Falkland B.C., (Falkland is about thirty minutes drive northwest of Vernon). You can reach the lake by car, on a mountain logging road from Falkland. It is a ten kilometer drive, but it takes about thirty minutes. You will climb over two thousand feet, to an elevation of approximately five thousand feet. But once you are there, PARADISE.
On top of Spa Mountain, you can drive for miles, but the first place you come to should be Bolean Lake and Bolean Lake Lodge. A beautiful little rustic facility, with ten cabins and a small camp ground. No phones, there is electricity in the evening (for the lights), clean central washroom facilities (although some cabins have running cold water, and two have their own washrooms), and very reasonable rates. A little slice of Heaven.
Not to mention the fishing. Did we mention the fishing? It is great, wild Rainbow Trout, not really large, but lots of them in the ten to fourteen inch range, and they bite best in the summer. Also, while most methods work here, small dry flies work the best. Now we really are in heaven. We usually went for two weeks. Oh yeah, dry fly fishing, Marian likes to use a number 10 Parachute Coachman, and Dave likes a number 14 red bodied Tom Thumb. These work great, we hardly ever change. Just find a spot off a weed bed, or the Island and, weellll, can't you just imagine. Wish we were there now! The best time is in the evening, but hot afternoons can be good too. We never catch anything in the morning, but then we never fish then either.
Bolean Lake's web site can be found here.

Dave us to be known to a few as Champagne Dave. This is because he wanted to use his soda maker to turn wine into Champagne. His brother-in-law, who also maked beer & wine, thought the idea of champagne on tap was cool! Although he was not prepared to try it himself, for that matter Dave hasn't either, yet. Dave's father who made wine for over thirty years (and would never have dreamed of using a kit like the rest of us) thought Dave was a peasant. So goes the family folklore. Dave swears that it worked with beer, that is, if you like foam, lots of foam.
Marian was the wino, oops, I mean the Head Vintner. She use to make the wine.
If you have dogs, you should read this!
A warning to beer makers. We have been informed by a Vet Toxicologist that when a dog ingests spent hops they can die. So please be sure that you dispose of your spent hops and other waste in a manner that dogs and other animals cannot ingest them.
